Random musings and discussions around anything related to the 7th Sea 2nd Edition

So tonight I finished my second "demo" session.  First time around, two weeks ago, I think I had...7 players.  Tonight I had 9.  All teens, most between the ages of 12 and 15.  We finished after a single action round against the giant crabstrosity guarding the treasure on the L'll du Bete.  Good times but DAMN.  Tracking raises with a big group will melt your brain.

The Good News: the kids LOVE the game.  I don't really know if its the pirate angle or just the change of pace from dungeoncrawling but they are all ready to jump ship and switch to 7th Sea.

If anyone's taken a look at the previews for the hero and villain decks, there's some surprising talk about Vaticine heroes trying to work for greater acceptance of sorcery.

This definitely seems like a departure from the design philosophy in 1e where strangely enough the Inquisition was kind of in the right about most sorcery, it was dangerous and innately tied to dark powers. While we already knew they weren't going to do much of a Cthulhuesque meta-plot, it's still somewhat surprising to hear a generally good church NPC talking favorably of sorcery.

Anyone played or know Earthdawn?

I was thinking, seeing how you're supposed to research/explore (i.e. go on side quests) to learn the lore that unlocks an Earthdawn magic item's powers, this would seem to be ideal for a 7th Age campaign. For example:

Rank 1: Learn the name of the smith who forged the weapon

Power: glows when monsters within 30'

Rank 2: Learn the name of the last monster the weapon destroyed

Power: +1 Wound

Hey everyone,

I’ve been playing 2e for a little while now with three players for five four hour sessions so far. Overall I love the system & setting and really appreciate the games meta mechanics. Dueling unfortunately came out as very flat & imbalanced to me. So I came up with a series of solutions that have worked well for my group.

Wondering if there is a place that hosts or anyone may now when the next books will be released?

Originally the Core Rule Book was talked about coming out in october, yet was released prior to Gencon and now you can order it almost anywhere and we still have a few weeks until October comes along.  Wondering if the next book will be Nations of Theah vol 1 or the pirate book?

Just curious as to looking ahead for my campaign.

Mark

Okay so this might be an odd question but it is one that I kinda need an answer to.

In 1E, people were given positions as Eisenfurst as a result of having posession of a vein of Dracheneisen. Of course, with the changes to Dracheneisen in 2E, this is no longer a feasible prospect. However, this begs the question: How does someone like ol' Nick Trague or Falk Fischler end up in a position of power? I genuinely can't think of anything, and thus am turning to the brains of this forum for help.

Much obliged!

So I'm opening up my demo round with a "friendly" tavern brawl.  All the opponents are brutes.  It's really just meant to give the new players a taste of how combat works. But rather than everyone investing in putting down brutes, I want to throw in some colorful consequences for them to buy off.  Funny thing, a lot of these tthings are related to the fight and would probably be handled with pressure if the opponents were villains.  Here's a rough version of my list:

For Dar Matushka sorcery, I am thinking of categorizing the animals in some way and doing the See/Call/Transform Choice based upon that. I've added a few also to round out the lists. My two options are:

Option 1: Group by Purpose - With this, I would likely give the Sorcerer a choice of 1 from each list each time the Advantage was taken

Group 1 (Companions): Cat, Fox, Rabbit, Seal, Snake, Turtle

Group 2 (Scouts): Bat, Fish, Mouse, Owl, Raven

Group 3 (Mounts): Antelope, Elk, Goat, Horse, Reindeer
