Random musings and discussions around anything related to the 7th Sea 2nd Edition

I was hoping some veterans of the game can tell me how they've composed PC groups consisting of characters from different nations.  Reading through the 1e materials, it's clear how much emphasis the authors place on a character's homeland.  And unless some/all of the PCs belong to the same secret society, it seems like it could be tricky having PCs of, say, 3 nations working together.  I'm looking for tips on to build relationships among PCs, whether they exist prior to the game's start or if the first session is their meeting.

Thank you!

Just a thought I was having while looking at the new map and noticing a few things that are different. I was hoping for more things that could be different. I wanted to start a thread discussing the politics as depicted in Theah in comparison to historical (or romantic) Early Modern Europe. My first thoughts were on how Vodacce was portrayed in 1st edition and things I would like to see in 2nd edition.

So I received the download link, two of them actually, in an e-mail today and evidently you only get one try each.  After that, Drive Thru RPG says they are invalid links and you have used them the maximum number of times.  Sorry that the download timed out but that is your problem.

WTF?

Having never played 7th Seas before, I felt it would be good to immerse myself in the setting by creating a character that could exist in the world. To this end, I started off with a mental image of the character. I have this love if kilts and since the Highland Marches of Avalon is basically Scotland, I decided my character would be from there and male. From there, I did the destiny spread to randomize a lot of details and to play with that mechanic.

So I've got good news and stressful good news.

The regular good news is that I ran the quickstart for my friends and they loved it! They weren't impressed with the dueling rules but they were glad to hear they wouldn't be kept in the final version.

This isn't suppose to be negatory. Just certain setting related things that we would like to be skipped for one reason or another. For me, I do not want to see an anologue to the Old West. I love the Old West with the gunslinging and the rooting tooting and whiskey drinking (My avatar was from a board game that I had backed at a level to get myself into it as a zombified encounter and the idea was you would come across a zombie moonshiner). All that love for the setting of the Old West, but it does not belong in 7th Seas. Not for at least 100 years in game time.

Have been re-reading the Castille 1e book and it got me thinking - who do you feel is 'in the right' in the Momtaigne invasion of Castille?

For those of you new to this here is a quick primer:

Just about every group has them, and I've seen people mention them here and there, so I thought it might be nice to have a place to collect them smiley. Obviously we don't know enough about 2E yet to really work out house rules, and it'll be months before we all get to play the full official rules, but we can start with 1E stuff and add 2E as we learn more.

Thing I loved in L5R and hated in 7th Sea are metaplot characters:

In L5R you had few long-dead heroes and distant world-scale BBEG likeSeven Thunders or Iuchiban, but no NPCs largely considered "canon" to have in your game. GMs have freedom to sculpt Crab daimyo's personality according to their campaign and players didn't have any expectations beforehand.

So, I know sometimes when RPGs release new editions they continue storylines from previous editions and "advance" the setting's canon timeline.  But if I'm reading correctly, both 7th Sea have the same start year (1668).  Has anything been said about whether adventures or plothooks from 1e will carry over?  Or will everything be "replaced" and restarted by 2e?
