I'm going to be playing 7th Sea soon for the first time and this seemed like the best place to get some help. I don't have a solid concept in my head right now but I know that what I want to do, primarily, is help the rest of the group. I hope that the more experienced players and GMs here can give me some advice on building a character and playing such a character (by which I mean 'what sort of things I should do to help'). Any help that you can offer is appreciated.

The very first time I've been reading through "making a hero" chapter, I've been amazed how many ideas for a hero I had. I wasn't a fan of swashbucklers and this genre was quite new for me, but after reading that chapter, my head was full of all that cool ideas. Thing is our GM just got his printed copy of 7th Sea 2e and has decided to change from directing Firefly to 7th Sea.

We were talking about what kind of characters we want to play and all the other players wanted quite dark archetypes who are moved by revenge against the cousin of a Vodacce Prince and/or a Vaticine Inquisitor.

So the other characters are likely to be an Eisen objectionist priest with a pantherfaut and (probably) hexenwerk, a pirate with some badass firepower and scoundrel habilities and an Avalon duelist knight.

So 2nd edition jettisoned the whole seperate Villainous Flaws and Wiles in favor of keeping everything under the umbrella of standard Arcana.  Villains get a both Arcana, which works I suppose but lacks the flavor of the old systsm.  How are people finding that works out in play?

am I correct that a character who purchases the Sorcery Background once for their Strega receives Read + 2 Minor Tesse + 1 Major Tessere?

And a character who takes the Background with its two Sorcery purchases receives Read, all 4 Minor Tesse, and any two major Tesse?
