Thoughts on the Card Game?
cards, card game

I wasn't sure if this was the best thread for this, but its my best guess. Did anyone here play the CCG? I've been poking around eBay seeing if I could snatch up some cheap cards. I'm mostly curious how well it captured the flavor of 7th Sea, and if any characters might pop up in 2e.

While I only vaguely remember playing the card game, I can tell you that the answer to your second question depends greatly on the exact language of the agreement between AEG and JWP. Seeing as the CCG intersected directly with the RPG in the book Waves of Blood, I would say that any character which originated in the CCG and which appeared in Waves of Blood is fair game for reappearance, but any that solely appeared in the CCG may still remain the property of AEG. It is possible (and this is how I understand it) that AEG sold the property lock, stock, and rum barrel to JWP and was then granted a license to create and market a CCG. If that is the case, then JWP owns everything that was in the CCG and it's all fair game.

A few years ago I was given a big box of 7th sea cards by a friend. No idea how much they are worth, but I've only ever used them as a prop for the RPG. Where in the world are you?

Ah-ha. Not practical to get them shipped from the UK!

Bummer! But I appreciate the thought. :)

They are worth... Well, whatever you value them to be. It's not a sought after commodity. Game play was OK but nothing earthshaking.

I have to say, I wish there some reliable place to at least find the card art.  I think it'd be really helpful in getting a fuller picure of the canon characters.  I've managed to find screengrabs for a couple of sets, but nothing definitive.

You have pretty good shots of the major players that would have appearances in the CCG in Pirate Nations and Waves of Blood.

Thanks for that, I'll be sure to look.

I have quite a few shots of cards I've been collecting over the last several months as I run into them, and I've been meaning to get them up in some sort of online medium, but simply have not had the time; I'd also been holding off on it because Sir Jack Harding at 7thsea.info has physical copies of all but 5 or 6 cards and was working on high-quality scans of them all. I'm not sure where he's at with those right now.

That's awesome! Let me know if you'd like any help with that.

I have actually a big collection. Around 20 decks and a lot of spare cards. I could find some that I have too many copies of and send them to you when I get back to my stuff in Greece if you're interested but even better, I have on OneDrive a big collection of IMAGES of the cards. I used them at some point to make proxies.

Actually I was more fan of the card game than the rpg. It had the beauty of abolishing phases and having everybody play at the same turn, one action at a time. This, in combination with the fact that most resources came from tacking (tapping) crew, gave it an elegant 'chess-like' feeling. A constant tension in which if you over-tapped you were opening yourself to an attack. But that was also one of the things which made it complex: you had to always calculate 'oh, if I take a cannon shot it will tack me 4 people, and I need those to avoid the boarding afterwards, so this leave me x people to use for that'' - and of course taking margins for surprises hiding in people's hands.

The game also had another characteristic which is beautiful for a dead game, but it was also what killed it: they tried hard to make all cards in your collection useful. First, they rotated too late (so at some point the complexity of the game and the ease to enter was immense) and when they rotated they added extra abilities to some of the weakest commons of the first editions, in order to make them useful. But the rotation came too late to become the rule, so most people play with a huge pool of almost 2 thousand cards. This makes it extremely hard for somebody to enter the game and be competitive, as they have to hunt cards across different editions.

Wow! That OneDrive is amazing! Thank you.

I used to play for a bit, but it didn't catch on my gaming gropu, so I eventually give up... Still have the cards, and I remember I had a good time playing, but I think mostly because I loved the setting.

It's not gonna be so strange if AEG somehow manages to publish a lcg or somethin in that style in the not so far future....
